¡¡¡¡The Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden¡ªthe Dresden Staatskapelle¡ªcelebrated its 450th Anniversary in September 1998. The Staatskapelle has been associated with music for the stage since the 17th century. Today it participates in some 240 opera and ballet performances annually at the Semperoper. The orchestra was founded for royal, liturgical, table, festive, theater and chamber music, with subscription concerts introduced in 1858. Presently, the orchestra plays 50 symphonic and special concerts as well as chamber and ensemble music. Outstanding musicians who have shaped this orchestra include Heinrich Sch¨¹tz, Johann Adolf Hasse, Carl Maria von Weber, Richard Wagner, Ernst von Schuch, Fritz Busch, Karl Böhm, Joseph Keilberth, Rudolf Kempe, Franz Konwitschny, Kurt Sanderling, and Herbert Blomstedt. Richard Strauss was associated with the Staatskapelle for more than 60 years as a composer and conductor. From 1992 until his death in April 2001 Giuseppe Sinopoli was its Chief Conductor. Sir Colin Davis was named Honorary Conductor in 1991. Included among the many prominent guest conductors have been Herbert von Karajan, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Eugen Jochum, Carlos Kleiber, James Levine, Seiji Ozawa, Andr¨¦ Previn, Zubin Mehta, Lorin Maazel¡ªand Bernard Haitink, who was recently named Chief Conductor upon the death of Giuseppe Sinopoli. In 2004, Fabio Luisi was appointed General Music Director of the Dresden Staatsoper and Chief Conductor of the Staatskapelle. He begins his tenure in the 2007-08 season.
